General Carbide's Mona Pappafava-Ray Wins Women in Business Award

The Pittsburgh Business Times recently honored Mona Pappafava-Ray, president of General Carbide, with a 2011 Women in Business Award. This recognition acknowledges Ms. Pappafava-Ray's success in helping the Greensburg, PA-based manufacturer of tungsten carbide tooling achieve a position of market leadership. Selected from more than 100 applicants, Ms. Pappafava-Ray shared the stage with 14 other honorees from diverse fields, including banking, energy, health care, law, manufacturing, non-profit organization management and real estate.
“I am humbled to be in the company of such a highly accomplished group of women,” said Ms. Pappafava-Ray in front of more than 300 attendees of a dinner held in the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh. “You don't win an award like this by yourself. Because I have a loving, supportive husband and wonderful daughter, and am surrounded by great people at work, I am fortunate to be able to balance my commitments to family, work and community, and accomplish so many things that I believe in passionately.”
The theme of balance echoed throughout the evening as awardees acknowledged the difficulties of giving focused attention to their families, businesses and communities, and feeling re-energized when they are able to do so.
“The talent and dedication of professionals throughout our community is outstanding, and learning more about those at the top of their field always inspires me to push myself harder,” said Lauren Lawley Head, editor of the Pittsburgh Business Times. “Their accomplishments help make Pittsburgh a dynamic place to live and work, and serve as in inspiration to us all.”
The Selection Process
The 2011 Women in Business Award winners were chosen by a panel of three judges: Ralph Egerman, principal, NAI Pittsburgh Commercial, a real estate investment firm; Velma Monteiro-Trible, former COO and assistant treasurer of the Alcoa Foundation; and Bill Troup, president of Sisterson & Co., LLP, one of the Pittsburgh region's largest public accounting firms.
The Women in Business Awards are part of the Pittsburgh Business Times' Business Women First Program which includes an ongoing series of panel discussions and networking activities.
